"Amen to that." The class bell rang, and Shizuo groaned. "Well, back to hell. What’s your next class?" She asked, grabbing her books.

"Geography." She replied as she threw her book in her bag. "How about you?"

"Same class. I guess we’ll be walking together, then." Shizuo gathered up her bag, and slung it over one shoulder, clutching the biology textbook to her chest.

"Guess so." Anrik faintly smiled and began heading towards the classroom. "Gods I can’t wait for uni."

"Believe me, I know the feeling." Shizuo chuckled. It was kind of nice to have someone to talk to. "It’s less than a year away, at least. We don’t have to wait too long."

The rest of the day was fairly uneventful, but she knew things were just getting started. As night fell the saloon became more busy, and quite a bit louder. This was where she’d really be put to work, though she had to admit she wasn’t really feeling it tonight.

She couldn’t get that damned sheriff out of her head. Rude as he’d been, she wanted to know more about him, where he came from, what made him tick. And she wouldn’t have minded bedding him, though every time the thought popped up she mentally slapped herself.

One of the other saloon girls told her to wait a few tables, and she groaned with irritation at one in particular, in the corner of the saloon, with some familiar and rather rowdy men gathered around. They always gave her trouble, and sure enough when Shino brought their drinks, one of them grabbed her rear. She slapped his hand disdainfully, frowning.

"How many times do I gotta tell ya, you’ve gotta pay for that?" She scolded. The man who’d goosed her was in his mid-twenties with shaggy brunette hair and hazel eyes, one missing and covered by an eyepatch. He was rude, brash, and an utter idiot. He merely grinned stupidly at her and slurred drunkenly.

"Aww, c’mon cactus flower, don’ be like that." He crooned, leaning forward to grab her rear again. She pulled away from him and smirked in satisfaction when the fool fell onto the floor.

"Enjoy your drinks." She said with the sweetest voice she could muster, yet she forced the warm smile which accompanied her words, and walked off to wait on a few more patrons. It took all her self-control not to double over in laughter at the way the idiot embarrassed himself. Served him right.

The sherriff spent much of the day in his office, only leaving once when a couple got into a dispute in the street. He sighed as he returned to his office, why folks always got to be treating each other so bad? He thought to himself. He also slightly regretted being rude to the saloon girl from earlier. He thought about apologising but decided against it. Hell he’d probably see her later when doubtless he’d be called to the saloon to sort out some troublemakers.

Sure enough a couple hours later he was called on to stop a brawl going on inside the saloon. He donned his hat and coat, made sure his weapons were by his side and strode out into the night. Without pausing he strode into the tavern and grabbed the troublemakers by the scruff of their necks. He slammed their heads together before tossing them to the floor. “Cool your fucking heels boys.” He growled. “Now get up. You’re both spending a night in the cells.” He gestured for them to be quick about it. He noticed the girl from earlier and nodded her a greeting.

Shino had been in the back having a little break when she heard the commotion in the parlor. She groaned, and knew exactly who’d started it before she even came out to see what the buzz was about. Sure enough, it was that damned idiot’s right hand man, and another she barely spoke to outside the saloon. It seemed the rest of the gang was ready to jump in when the Sheriff interfered. They backed off, not too keen on spending the night in jail.

The other saloon girls immediately set to gossiping and whispering about the sheriff. Shino gave him her practically trademarked playful smirk, and nodded in response. The gesture was witnessed by the other girls, one of whom giggled and nudged Shino.

"Oh, he likes you." She teased. Shino rolled her eyes.

"Oh, no he doesn’t. You should’ve been outside earlier." She whispered back. "Now, quit gossipin’, girls. We got some cleanin’ up to do."

Shizuo’s last attempt at gathering test subjects had gone horribly, horribly wrong. She had been caught, and came quite close to being purged. She’d only barely managed to get away, but not before being shot in the abdomen by a las round. Now she was stumbling back to her lab, chest heaving as she felt herself quickly losing precious blood. She knew the parasite could sustain her a little longer, but also knew that if she lost any more blood, she would die. The idea chilled her to the core. She had lived this long, three hundred years and forty-five days, and this was how it would end. She stumbled, and fell to her knees. She was in within the limits of the ruined city where she’d made her base. But she was still so far away. It would take a miracle to save her now.

She seemed to tense when he asked about her wound. “Well, adrenaline does cause one to bleed out more quickly, not to mention the physical activity of just getting here was quite a strain.” In truth, her body was weaker than most, due to her age and especially delicate because where she had been shot was very, very close to where the parasite that kept her alive rested. Without that parasite, she would have certainly been dead by the time he’d found her. Not that he really needed to know that particular tidbit of information. While it sustained her, the parasite could also be considered a weakness. Take it out, and Shizuo would go with it.

He only needed to sense that tension to know that it wasn’t everything. And in his experience, anything kept from his is usually something they consider a weakness. Understandable, he muses to himself, but curiosity demands that he knows nonetheless. Besides, she is a wonderful scientist who he would hate to lose due to poor knowledge.

"What would have happened if when I arrived you were unconscious? I would have needed to ensure that whatever I did do to help you didn’t make it worse, and I know there is something more, Shizuo. You should know by now my sense of observation has no equal, save for your own. I value that in you, among other things, and I have no desire to see that gone."

She sighed heavily. He was no fool, and she almost felt bad for treating him as such. Besides, he had proven trustworthy so far, so she figured it was rather unlikely that he would prove otherwise without good reason.

"Alright. I suppose I should explain. You see, before I defected to the cause of Chaos, I was a scientist. I specialized in parasites and the like, and studied ways to prevent and even cure illnesses, mostly to use against the forces of Nurgle himself. However, I began to see the benefits of utilizing such things to gain an upper hand. Of course, it wouldn’t work too well against Nurglites, though I theorize that various xeno races have different immunities than we do, and we could capitalize on such a weakness.

One of my earliest experiments was done after discovery of a very unique, and very rare parasite. The only one of its kind, as far as I know. I was ordered to destroy it immediately after study, but I wondered just what kind of benefits it would have on a host. However, I had no real options for test subjects. It would have been too risky, I would have been shot for heresy on the spot if I was discovered. So…Having no other options, I used myself as a subject.

I admit, the whole process was excruciatingly painful for the first few days. I was able to cover things up with some well-placed excuses about side effects, and for the most part, those who observed me believed it. After about the third day, the pain subsided and I was renewed with energy after a good meal. Years passed, and I noted that I did not age. I can tell you, I am quite a bit older than what I appear, all thanks to that little, daring experiment of mine. Over time, my body has become so finely tuned and integrated with the parasite that should any harm befall it, I would certainly die. The las wound I currently sport was very, very close to where the parasite currently rests inside my body. While the damage to it is clearly nowhere near fatal, it very well could have been had that Guardsman had a little bit more accurately aimed to the left. As for the reason I bled so quickly and so much, it is a side effect of my true age. My blood has thinned over the years, as such it is quite easy for me to bleed out. It’s nearly happened a couple of times over the course of twenty years, and I theorize it is one of the few ways I can truly perish. Should I sustain organ damage, damage to the parasite, or bleeding out. Though I’m not entirely sure about the organ damage. However, I’m not exactly keen to test it on myself, either.”

She let out a long sigh, rolling her eyes as she did. This egg was just too tough to crack. “Alright then. If you haven’t got yourself shot in a couple weeks and find yourself needin’ some valuable information, y’know where to find me.” She retreated back into the saloon, thinking to herself that it wasn’t like she ever left the damn place. She wondered if she should just take her earnings and get out of dodge, maybe get herself a nice little ranch by a riverbank.

Maybe they’d send that cute sheriff to get her and her money back.

"Oh, stop it." She scolded herself for thinking such things. That’s how she usually got herself into trouble. She went about her usual during the day duty, which mostly consisted of serving drinks and tidying the place up. Occasionally someone would get rowdy and cop a feel, but once she reminded them that that was a paid service, they lightened right up. ‘Cheapskates,’ she thought to herself. ‘Don’t mind a little touchy-feely when it’s free, but soon as y’gotta pay for it suddenly it’s a bad thing.’ She shook her head, and continued her duties.

He let out a heavy sigh. True this whore was pretty but her attitude rubbed him up the wrong way not to mention he had sworn off women after his wife had died. He took a slow walk back to his offices, nodding greetings to passing citizens. Maybe he should of been nicer to her.
